As awareness continues to spread of our physical Black lives that are in peril, may Black Recovery memoir spread awareness to a critically neglected part of our being also in peril – our Spirit.

“We shall never secure emancipation from the tyranny of the white oppressor until we have achieved it in our own soul.” -W.E.B. Du Bois

Alcoholism and addiction, emotional suffering, and mental health suffering are disproportionately impacting marginalized communities and are often the symptoms of a greater, underlying Spiritual malady. A malady for which there is a Spiritual solution which I suffered high and low in order to find the spiritual solution, and for this I actually became grateful.

“There is a spirit, and a need, and a man, at the beginning of every great human advance. Each of these must be right…” -Coretta Scott King

It was an underlying Spiritual malady that plagued me deeply until Dr. Gloria Montgomery and the Hollywood and Vine Recovery Center journeyed alongside me as I trudged a 12-step path of self-discovery and self-help Spiritual in its nature.

The Black Recovery memoir tells the story of my journey along my path to the Solution of Spiritual Recovery. And if you can relate then you, too, can Recover.

“I speak to the black experience, but I am always talking about the human condition – about what we can endure, dream, fail at, and still survive.” –Maya Angelou
