Yvonne Wheeler: Another First for Black Women

December 23, 2022 Posted by Anneca Peoples Uncategorized

A historic congratulations to Yvonne Wheeler who won a unanimous vote to preside over the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO. At the end of November, 2022, Wheeler’s election into her new position as President makes her the first Black woman to head The Federation which was founded back in the late 1800’s.

Yvonne Wheeler, President of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor.

Wheeler, already a respected veteran in the labor force, now leads approximately 300 unions which service an estimated 800,000 workers.

According to a Los Angeles Times reporter, “Wheeler will be tasked with repairing the institution’s relationship with Black workers and building solidarity with Latino workers, and her background working with a wide range of public and private sector unions and her history of advocacy for more diversity in labor groups will serve her well, labor leaders and experts said.”

Wheeler released a statement which included the following:

“I am honored to be elected to lead during such a critical time for workers. In a post-COVID reality, we have to rebound, restabilize, and reimagine from the perspective of workers to ensure we are on the right path, and that has to be our priority.”
